Cool Breeze Invitational on 9/3:
Team: Amy V, Belle, Brittany, Chandler, Karen, Katelyn, Mia, Rylee
Location:
Brookside Country Club
1133 Rosemont Avenue
Pasadena, CA 91103
Admission: $5
Race Time: 9:40 P.M. (We will have the van to carpool the team and will leave at 6:30 from the HS lot)

With this race taking place so late in the evening, you will need to make adjustments to your meal schedule on Saturday. I highly recommend that you have dinner around noon to 1:00. This should consist of a well-rounded meal, but try to go easy on meats and fats. These are more difficult for your body to digest, and you want a ¨light" stomach for the race. At your regular dinner time, or around 5:00, a medium snack or lunch-like meal should be consumed. Again, you want to focus on easily digested foods (I´m a fan of peanut butter and banana sandwiches with honey), so that you don´t have stomach issues during the race. Finally, a small snack about two hours before the race should have you ready to go at 9:40. Of course you should be staying hydrated during the day, but don´t overdo it, since water sloshing around in your belly makes it hard to run fast!

Keep running,
Coach Horton

Wild Duck Summary & New Training Plan

Athletes,

For many of you, the Wild Duck 5k was another step forward in your fitness, race experience, and toughness. There were improvements of 1-2 minutes from many of you who ran this race last year, which bodes well for the coming season.

Over the next week, we will be determining who will make the Cool Breeze (9/3) team and who will be racing at Sea Breeze (9/2), so eat well, train smart, and get plenty of rest. If for some reason you can't make these races, please let me know ASAP.

 Keep running,
Coach Horton

FAQ as School/Season Begins

Athletes & Parents,

Many parents and athletes have questions about training and racing once the school year begins. Please see the FAQs below and don't hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions or concerns.

1) What days and times are practices held?
- Athletes should expect to have practice until 4:00ish on Mondays and Tuesdays and some Fridays. On Wednesdays, due to block 5th, practice will usually end around 4:30. On Thursdays, practice will conclude around 3:00 or 3:30. Most Fridays will be a day off as will Sundays. On Saturdays without meets, practice will usually be from 8:30-10:30.

2) Will the whole team attend all the meets together?
- Some meets, as noted on the calendar, will be Varsity only (Cool Breeze, Woodbridge, etc.). Some meets will only have Frosh-Soph and JV teams attending (Laguna Hills, etc.). League meets will have all athletes competing.

3) How, as a parent, can I help my daughter attain her full potential?
- Time management is a key component for the student/athlete. Please help your daughter organize her day so that she can attend to her academics, eat well, get enough rest, and have consistent attendance at practice. Providing wholesome and well-balanced food choices is paramount as well. Your daughter is working hard and needs plenty of good nutritious food. BE INVOLVED. Communicate with your daughter about her day, how she is feeling and don't hesitate to contact me if you see problems.

As stated above, if I've missed something, please contact me!

We will also be looking for parent drivers to assist us in shuttling the team back to school on point-to-point runs. These runs allow us to eliminate the tedious run back to school and greatly enhance our training. Please let me know if you can help.

Keep running,
Coach Horton

Mammoth Summary, School Begins, and Race Info

Athletes,

The Mammoth Crew survived big miles, bears, high altitude, and Coach Horton's cooking to return to San Clemente stronger and fitter then ever! Thank you to all of the athletes, Coach Alison, Nannie, and Bampa for a great week in the mountains. I'd say that you all exceeded what you though you were capable of, and I know you'll take that strength of mind into your future training and racing.

We will be taking a group down to Oceanside on the 20th to run the Wild Duck 5k cross country race to practice race strategy and measure your fitness. This race has a true XC course and you also get a t-shirt with your entry! Please see the link for the entry form below. I need your entries no later than Friday's practice. You can email the form, take a picture, or bring it on Friday.

With the start of the school year approaching, it will be important for you to prepare each day to meet all of your responsibilities, both academic and athletic. Please be sure to have a good lunch/snack each day and don't forget to bring two water bottles to school. If you are not fueled and hydrated properly, you will not be able to perform to your potential. Your teammates are relying on you to do your part.

Keep running,
Coach Horton
