Finals Week/1st Week of Winter Break

Athletes,

Please see the link below for the next two weeks of training. As we discussed previously, we'd like you to download "Map My Run" or "Run Keeper" to your phone so you can record your independent runs. Over the next two weeks, there will be a number of independent workouts. Please do your best to get these done and reported to Coach Eisele and me. You are laying the foundation for your track season, and missing workouts will likely lead to injury or slower times once the season starts. For those that will be out of town, do your best to replicate these workouts either outside or on a treadmill.

Pre-Season Track & Meet Schedule

Athletes & Parents,

With a great XC season under your belts, you should all look forward to keeping the "ball" rolling into track season!

The strength you gained from training for and racing three miles will now be coupled with more speed oriented training for the shorter and faster races of track season. Over the next few weeks, you'll be easing back into training so you don't completely lose the fitness you developed during XC season and to prepare your body for the true start of base training at the end of December and early January.

Please see the link below for the training schedule and note that much of your training during December will be independent, and it will be your responsibility to complete the prescribed workouts so you can attain the goals you set for yourself in track and beyond. Remember, you guys were one small step from making it to the California State XC Championship. Next fall, we will be shooting for a spot in the State meet, and the training and racing you'll do this winter and spring will all be investments in that long-term goal.

It is highly recommended that you group up and get the training done together. Coach Eisele and I ask that you text us with a brief report/Garmin readout of your workouts when we are not there. These early workouts might not seem important, but they are key to preparing your body for injury-free training in January and beyond.

League Finals & CIF Prelims

Athletes,

As the season winds down, it will be important for those who are running varsity, or have the potential to run varsity, to stay focused over the next two weeks. Please note that after League Finals, the top 9-10 times will make up the CIF Varsity Team and alternates. For those who don't make the CIF squad, you'll have a few weeks off to rest and recover from all the hard work you put in this season!

Riverside Summary & Last Week Before League Finals

Athletes,

There were many solid efforts at the CIF preview meet on Saturday, and with the Varsity team most likely racing there on November 11th for CIF prelims, it was important to study the course for that important race. Thank you to all of the parents that came out to support the teams, they deserve a BIG "thank you" for dealing with the horrible traffic on the way home!

The coming week will be an important one. We will be tapering for League Finals, which means that you will be running fewer miles this week and focusing on turning your legs over (SPEED). Our goal is to deliver you guys to the starting line strong, fresh, and ready to race! With this goal in mind, it will be important for you to eat well, stretch, and get as much rest as possible so your body can absorb the training you have been doing for the last few months. You guys are strong and fit!

Going into League Finals, the Varsity team is neck-and-neck with El Toro. There are rumors that some of the other top teams in Orange County are nursing illness and injury. If you guys can stay focused, strong, and injury free, the potential for winning a League Championship is very real!

Finally, you'll note on the training plan that we will be having a workout after team pictures. Unfortunately, pictures fall on the best day for a final speed workout prior to the League meet. I asked Coach Proodian to do his best to keep the pictures moving smoothly and efficiently so we can get down to business. Coach Eisele and I will shuttle the team to San Luis Rey for the workout. It will be a relatively short practice and we hope to be done by a reasonable hour:)

Keep running,

P.S. Coach Proodian will be discussing the Varsity positions for League Finals and CIF Prelims by mid-week.

And finally, the Varsity team, lead by Chandler, Katelyn, Mia, and Belle finished ninth in all of Orange County!!! Way to go girls!

Please note the times listed on the training plan link for the Riverside meet next weekend. This meet will give those that may be running CIF  the opportunity to preview the course, so please make sure you can be there!

Woodbridge Classic Summary, Dana Invitational Info and Training Plan

Athletes & Parents,

The Woodbridge Invitational was a resounding early-season success! Our Varsity Squad, and team in general, is performing at a new level! Congrats to the team for beating El Toro and finishing 27th out of 257 teams! For those that finished in the top five at Woodbridge, you will be skipping Dana in favor of getting some solid training in.

The Dana Hills Invitational takes place next Saturday (Sr 8:15, Jr 8:45, So 9:15, Fr 9:45). Please arrive and check in with Coach Proodian no later than one hour prior to your race.

Please be sure to check the training plan for the next two weeks below.

Cool Breeze Summary, Laguna Hills & Training Plan

Athletes,

For those that ran the Cool Breeze Invitational, the race provided an opportunity to experience the type of high level meet we hope to be competing in later in the season. All of you can take lessons from your experience on the fairways of Brookside Country Club. Coach Eisele and I are proud of the efforts you put out there in the race and in your training.

Going forward, over the next two months, our training will become more intense as we take our team to the next level. This will require you, the athlete, to do your part in taking care of yourself (eating/hydrating well, stretching, attending practice, and getting rest) and approaching your racing/training with an "elite" mentality. As you've heard me say before, doing great things isn't easy, otherwise everyone would do them! We are asking all those that train with us to approach cross country with this mentality.

Please note the schedule for the Laguna Hills meet on the training plan and let your parents know that parking can be an issue, so they should plan to be at Laguna Hills High School at least an 1.5 hours before your race time.

Keep running,
Coach Horton

P.S. For those running Varsity at Woodbridge (currently Amy V, Belle, & Chandler w/final two spots TBD after Laguna Hills) we will be racing at 8:54 p.m.)

Sea Breeze Run & Cool Breeze Invitational Information

Athletes & Parents,

Please see the information below regarding our upcoming meets. As usual, plan to arrive not later than one hour prior to your scheduled race time.

Sea Breeze Run at Dana Hills HS on 9/2:
Race Schedule:
Freshman 6:15 (Camryn, Esther, Makenna, Reagan)
Sophomores 6:45 (Renee)
Juniors 7:15 (Amy S, Anezka, Brisa, Madison)
Seniors 7:45 (Yareli)

Contact Coach Eisele or Horton when you arrive to coordinate your warm-up.

Cool Breeze Invitational on 9/3:
Team: Amy V, Belle, Brittany, Chandler, Karen, Katelyn, Mia, Rylee
Location:
Brookside Country Club
1133 Rosemont Avenue
Pasadena, CA 91103
Admission: $5
Race Time: 9:40 P.M. (We will have the van to carpool the team and will leave at 6:30 from the HS lot)

With this race taking place so late in the evening, you will need to make adjustments to your meal schedule on Saturday. I highly recommend that you have dinner around noon to 1:00. This should consist of a well-rounded meal, but try to go easy on meats and fats. These are more difficult for your body to digest, and you want a ¨light" stomach for the race. At your regular dinner time, or around 5:00, a medium snack or lunch-like meal should be consumed. Again, you want to focus on easily digested foods (I´m a fan of peanut butter and banana sandwiches with honey), so that you don´t have stomach issues during the race. Finally, a small snack about two hours before the race should have you ready to go at 9:40. Of course you should be staying hydrated during the day, but don´t overdo it, since water sloshing around in your belly makes it hard to run fast!

Wild Duck Summary & New Training Plan

Athletes,

For many of you, the Wild Duck 5k was another step forward in your fitness, race experience, and toughness. There were improvements of 1-2 minutes from many of you who ran this race last year, which bodes well for the coming season.

Over the next week, we will be determining who will make the Cool Breeze (9/3) team and who will be racing at Sea Breeze (9/2), so eat well, train smart, and get plenty of rest. If for some reason you can't make these races, please let me know ASAP.

FAQ as School/Season Begins

Athletes & Parents,

Many parents and athletes have questions about training and racing once the school year begins. Please see the FAQs below and don't hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions or concerns.

1) What days and times are practices held?
- Athletes should expect to have practice until 4:00ish on Mondays and Tuesdays and some Fridays. On Wednesdays, due to block 5th, practice will usually end around 4:30. On Thursdays, practice will conclude around 3:00 or 3:30. Most Fridays will be a day off as will Sundays. On Saturdays without meets, practice will usually be from 8:30-10:30.

2) Will the whole team attend all the meets together?
- Some meets, as noted on the calendar, will be Varsity only (Cool Breeze, Woodbridge, etc.). Some meets will only have Frosh-Soph and JV teams attending (Laguna Hills, etc.). League meets will have all athletes competing.

3) How, as a parent, can I help my daughter attain her full potential?
- Time management is a key component for the student/athlete. Please help your daughter organize her day so that she can attend to her academics, eat well, get enough rest, and have consistent attendance at practice. Providing wholesome and well-balanced food choices is paramount as well. Your daughter is working hard and needs plenty of good nutritious food. BE INVOLVED. Communicate with your daughter about her day, how she is feeling and don't hesitate to contact me if you see problems.

As stated above, if I've missed something, please contact me!

We will also be looking for parent drivers to assist us in shuttling the team back to school on point-to-point runs. These runs allow us to eliminate the tedious run back to school and greatly enhance our training. Please let me know if you can help.

Mammoth Summary, School Begins, and Race Info

Athletes,

The Mammoth Crew survived big miles, bears, high altitude, and Coach Horton's cooking to return to San Clemente stronger and fitter then ever! Thank you to all of the athletes, Coach Alison, Nannie, and Bampa for a great week in the mountains. I'd say that you all exceeded what you though you were capable of, and I know you'll take that strength of mind into your future training and racing.

We will be taking a group down to Oceanside on the 20th to run the Wild Duck 5k cross country race to practice race strategy and measure your fitness. This race has a true XC course and you also get a t-shirt with your entry! Please see the link for the entry form below. I need your entries no later than Friday's practice. You can email the form, take a picture, or bring it on Friday.

With the start of the school year approaching, it will be important for you to prepare each day to meet all of your responsibilities, both academic and athletic. Please be sure to have a good lunch/snack each day and don't forget to bring two water bottles to school. If you are not fueled and hydrated properly, you will not be able to perform to your potential. Your teammates are relying on you to do your part.

Rolling Into July & Other Important Updates

Athletes & Parents,

The first few weeks of summer training have gone well and you continue to impress! We are so proud of the dedication you are showing as you lay the foundation for a successful cross country season.

As we get deeper into summer, completing the prescribed training becomes even more important. We will begin implementing more specific workouts that will help to develop your strength, speed, and stamina. In addition to the physical benefits, the confidence you gain from participating in this strenuous program will help you race to your potential when the season begins.

On Thursday, June 30th, we will be having our first Mammoth Training Camp time trial. The TT will help us identify which athletes will qualify to attend the Mammoth Training Camp in August. A combination of TT times, and consistent attendance at practices, will be used to determine the camp roster. The training camp will be limited to 11 athletes so we can provide a safe and fun experience. For those who know they won't be attending camp, Coach Eisele will be having an alternate workout in the afternoon on June 30th.

Nuts & Bolts:
- Please remember to text Coach Eisele or Coach Horton when you won't be able to make it to practice. The earlier you let us know, the better, but please do your best to make it to all assigned training sessions. Your teammates are counting on you!
- If you are going on vacation, please let Coach Horton know so he can prescribe make-up workouts for you while you are gone.
- Don't forget to bring a recovery shake/smoothie to all practices that are highlighted in yellow.
- Don't forget to bring your hydration drinks to all practices.
- Please bring a towel to all practices.
- Please let Coach Horton know if you will be able to do the "Bake at the Lake" race on July 16th (highly recommended). We may be able to get a lower entry fee if we all enter as a group. I'll keep you posted. We will also be arranging carpooling as well.
- We will continue doing core/strength training during most practice sessions, and we will begin implementing stretching routines as well. Please make an effort to stretch on your own in addition to the stretching we do at practice.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Coach Horton.

Great Quote!!!

Athletes,

Below you will find a quote from Sarah Crouch who was the second American finisher at the recent Boston Marathon. Her eloquent words sum up what competing is all about. Please read and contemplate her words as our season draws to an end and carry them with you as we move into preseason XC training.

For our seniors who are leaving competitive running behind, know that you are a better and more well-rounded human being because of your dedication and commitment to running.

I have also included a link to Sara's blog is you are interested in reading the whole entry..

"Yes, I was in pain, but it was the good kind of pain, the pain that comes with a physical exertion so great that for the final miles it is as though the fingers of human experience outgrow the glove of flesh. At the end of a marathon you are pushing in such a way that neither body nor mind have the desire to continue which allows your spirit to take over.

It’s like you are fasting from comfort, denying yourself the most basic human need of painlessness to find a greater reward. That reward is the knowledge of what you are able to withstand. People who don’t run, who don’t engage in this feeling, are ships that have never left the harbor. We have weathered the storm, been tossed about by the waves, feared that the end would never come and are better for it."

- Sarah Crouch

OC Champs Reflections and Next Two Weeks

Athletes,

As is life, OC Champs went well for some and was more challenging for others. We can take the lessons learned, the ups and downs, and use them to our advantage in the future.

The forecast of cool temperatures was instead replaced with mid 70s and a bit of wind. Not horrible conditions, but not great either.

The Racers of the Meet award has to go to Marley and Chandler. Both athletes inserted themselves into positions to go for wins, and while neither won their races, they pr'd (Marley at 2:30 in the 800 and Chandler at 5:17 in the 1600 along with an 11:29 in the 3200) and gained valuable experience at, or near, the front of the pack.

Amber, McKenna, and Haleigh are still feeling the effects of the Coachella weekend, but all three still showed up to race. It says a lot, especially for the seniors, that they are still putting it on the line when it would be much easier to throw in the towel. I'm pretty sure these ladies are psyched to finish strongly at prelims and  finals!

In the 1600, Nicole gained more experience in the invitational setting. Getting stuck behind a stampede of 30 runners makes it difficult to get into a rhythm. Get out strong and fast!

In the Varsity 800, Marina battled through a tough crowd, and not feeling her best, to get close to her pr from last year. Not a bad race, but her expectations are on another level now and she'll be looking to get some revenge at league prelims and finals.

Sara was burdened with the last race of the day, at least for our group, and ran 12:08 in the 3200, a time which she would have been more than happy with last year, but this isn't last year. Sara's expectations, like Marina's, are much higher now and I can't wait to see what happens at league finals.

On a final OC Champs note, a Team Spirit award has to go to Brittany, Mia, and Nicole for coming/staying to support their teammates. At the end of the day, personal relationships are really what life is all about, and as an added bonus, they got to witness some really good races!

Now to change gears, this week's volume will be less than previous weeks, but we will have two more tough workouts. Rest, and proper nutrition, will be very important as we get closer to prelims and finals. We want you feeling fresh and  sharp when you get to the starting line.

Triton Reflections & This Week's Training Plan

Athletes,

What a day on Saturday at the Triton Invitational! I was there from 7:00am-6:00pm and I now have a newfound respect for what it takes to put on a large invitational track meet. I am requesting that each and every one of you seek out Coach Johnson and thank him for all of his hard work!

As in life, Saturday was picture perfect for some, and more challenging for others. Essentially, that's how life is. The trick is to not allow the amazing days or the difficult days overwhelm you. Try to keep an even keel. Each meet is a learning experience and you get a chance to put those lessons into practice on Thursday at Laguna Hills.

In the 3200, Chandler and Sara nailed it! PRs all around. Both ladies came to the line calm, cool, and collected. Sara didn't panic or lose focus when she was caught in "no-man's land" mid-race, and blazed a last 400 to explode through the 12 minute barrier (11:53)! Chandler went out and lead the first lap against 5:00 milers and League Champions and then tucked in and ran fearlessly for seven more laps to a huge PR (11:17)! LESSONS: Run free and without fear!

In the 1600s, Renee(5:56) ran with a fearlessness that we haven't seen before. Katina (6:28) battled through debilitating shin splints. Mia (5:47 PR) and Nicole(5:50) overcame pre-race anxiety to finish with strong final laps. Amber (5:36) didn't let the dreaded "Hot Tub dead-legs" ruin her day. LESSONS: Come to the line confident and excited to race for yourself, your team, and your coaches. Also, no hot tubbing the night before a race!:)

The 800s, provided a picture of what life is like in a nutshell. Katelyn(2:53) went for it on the first lap. Amy S went out and executed her race plan to the tune of a 2:38 PR. She then came back and helped the 4 x 800 team to a silver medal! It was one of those nearly perfect days. Hailey(2:44) continues to get her confidence and race tactics back. Marina was up against some heavy hitters in her heat. Overcoming heavy legs, sore hip flexors, pushing and shoving on the first lap, and a stumble on the second lap, she still gutted out a 2:23. She'll live to battle another day. LESSONS: Things don't always work out as planned, but you just have to roll with it and move on.

Follow the links below for Triton results, pictures, and this week's training plan. Also, please let me know if you are interested in and available to run the Trabuco Hills Invitational (Friday 4/1 for most of the team or Saturday 4/2 for those with qualifying times).

El Toro All-Comers Meet Reflection and 2/22-28 Training Plan

Athletes,

Coach Eisele and I are very proud of the effort you all put into the El Toro meet!

These meets offer an opportunity to assess your current fitness, learn/practice race strategies, and just have fun competing. As we go forward, it will be important to learn from both training and racing.

In your races, I challenge you to come to the line with the right attitude. Some nerves are okay, but really, you need to attack your racing with a positive, joyful, and competitive attitude. Yes, there will be pain, but that will be short lived. Focus on all of the training you have completed in preparation. Remember your teammates, coaches and parents who have supported you. Push yourself to see what you can achieve, and finally, the faster you run, the sooner you get chocolate milk!

El Toro Results

In your training, it is paramount for each of you to run within yourself. Please don't take this to mean that training will be easy, but we have a range of fitness-levels within our group and it is tempting to push harder than you should at times. Each workout has a specific purpose and if you run faster or slower than the prescribed paces, you won't be getting the true benefit of the workout. Please try to be honest with yourself:)

The Season Draws Near: Upcoming Meets, Rest, Nutrition, and This Week's Training Plan

Athletes,

We are less than a month away from the official start of the season. With this in mind, our training will be getting more intense. As I have stated before, proper nutrition and rest are paramount to staying healthy and having a good season. Please do your best to make sure you are taking care of yourself!

In regards to training, it is also very important that you are running the correct paces during workouts. We have a variety of different fitness levels in our group, and it is important that you are not trying to run paces that are far outside of your current fitness. Workouts will be hard, but you don't want to be "going to the well" too often or you'll break down.

We will be participating in two more "practice" meets in the coming weeks. On February 20th, the El Toro All Comers Meet (http://www.prepcaltrack.com/wp-contentdata/uploads/2015/11/ET-All-Comers-Meet-Info.pdf) will give you an opportunity to fine tune your racing strategy and test your fitness. The 1600s start at 9:00 (arrive by 8:00) and the 800s will start approximately an hour later, although exact times will be determined by the number of entrants.

On February 27th, we'll be racing the Laguna Beach Distance Carnival (https://lagunabeachdistancecarnival.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/laguna-beach-distance-carnival-meet-schedule-of-events1.pdf). For this event, we'll need to preregister, so please let me know if you can attend. Entry for this meet will be covered by the school's track budget and Coach Proodian asked me to remind you to please make a donation to the team.

Please see the link below for this week's training plan.

Torrance All-Comers Reflection and This Week's Training Plan

Athletes,

Thank you to those who made it to the meet this weekend. It was a good fitness test as we get closer to the season. I'd say you all should be satisfied with your races. We had some unexpected PRs, even though we only have two real workouts in the legs, and for those that didn't get PRs, you were able to practice and learn about possible race strategies for the upcoming season. Remember that the psychological part of racing is almost as important as the physical part. A positive approach to racing is key to successful racing. No fear! Hopefully your races will help keep you motivated you as we get into more intense workouts in the coming weeks. TRACK IS BACK!

Please check out the quote below:

“It used to bug me and I used to put more pressure on myself but recently, if I take care of business and do what I train to do, I’m not going to be disappointed with a bad race,” Hunter said. “I know I’m in shape to [race well]. What everyone else says is kind of irrelevant to me. I just want to go out there, do my best, and if I have a bad race, everyone has bad races [at some point]. People are putting pressure for me to run sub-4:00 and obviously that’s there because I ran 4:02 last year. That’s expected and I hope to improve and run fast.”

Drew Hunter to letsrun.com after breaking the 50+  year old HS record for the 3000m (7:59).

Please remember that we will be  doing another all-comers meet on Feb. 20th at El Toro HS. For this meet, if you'd like to run in something other than the 1600, please let me know, so we can plan accordingly.

Please follow the link below for this week's training plan. Please note the different meeting times for the A & B group on Saturday at San Luis Rey park. We will discuss how that will work at practice this week.

Training Plan 1/4-10

Athletes,

Please follow the link below for next week's training plan.

Also, Coach Proodian will be running time trials this week. I'd like our group to run the TT on Wednesday, as indicated in the schedule. Please bring your XC racing flats for the TT (no spikes yet).

It looks like there will be quite a bit of rain this week, so you may want to pack a  towel to dry off with before riding home after practice.

Keep Running,
Coach Horton
